UM Judo Club has been fortunate to have many experienced Sensei over the years. Founded by Dr. Ken Min, UM Judo continues under his guidance 44 years later. During those years, the Club has been instructed by Richard Soon Il Choi, Sensei Joe DeVictoria, Sensei J.R. Reynolds, and Sensei Kim Sol.

Guest instructors have included
Eveliina Kallioniemi, and Janna Cremer. Eveliina is working at the Montana Forest & Conservation Station and comes to the UM Campus as a former national Judo champion of Finland and member of the Finnish National Team in the 58 kg division. Janna trained at UM in the 1990s and has returned to train and teach.

The whole Dojo is moving, practicing, and then you notice something is not moving. Through all the whirl and activity in the Dojo, you see, across the mat, the old teacher standing there, watching. And that transforms the whole thing.– Trevor Leggett

Sensei Kim Sol began his practice of Judo in 1970, studying with Richard Soon Il Choi.

Sensei Sol attributes his appreciation for Judo to his instructors:  Dr. Ken Min, Soon Il Choi, Shigeki Umemoto, Jae Ho Park, Suk Byung Park, J.R. Reynolds, and Takahiko Ishikawa.

Sensei Sol currently holds black belt rank in six martial arts, including Judo, Ju Jitsu, Aikido, Hapkido, Karate and Taekwondo.  A 4th Dan, he is also one of the few sensei in Montana who holds official Kodokan rank. He is a Patron Life Member of the United States Judo Association, a Life Member of the United States Judo Federation and a permanent member of the Kodokan Institute.

"Over the years, it has been a great privilege to instruct many fine students. As a competitor, a referee many years ago, a National Judo Rank Examiner and a National Kata Examiner, supporting Judo on a national level also had its own rewards. Now, my enjoyment comes from seeing the students do well, in Judo and in life."
